Migrant Trade Unionism (MTU)

As a core thematic program of APMM, migrant trade unionism was born of the recognition that the overwhelming majority of migrants in the Asia Pacific are workers, and have to be approached as such in terms of organizing and advocacy. Specifically, the program aims to promote the organization or inclusion of migrant workers in the region into trade unions that have the right to bargain collectively for their economic and social welfare, and to serve further as enduring platforms for comprehensive capacity-building.

The program is envisioned as providing a regional network of advocacy support for migrant organizations and related programs in receiving-country trade unions. This network will help project migrant-specific local labor issues internationally, and will harness its partners’ capacities in the promotion of sound strategies for migrant organizing and advocacy across the region.
