"We dream of a society where families were not broken up
by urgent need for survival. We dream and will actively work for a homeland where there is opportunity for everyone to live a decent and humane life."

This mini-research (download file)is part of the program of the Asia Pacific Mission for Migrants (APMM) to combat sex trafficking. Though it is focused mainly on Filipino women, it can also be used to understand in general how sex trafficking works and its extent, especially in Third World countries.

The research project on the Impacts of Globalization on Women Migrants (download MS Word file) is an off shoot of the Asia-Pacific Conference on Women and Labour organized by the Asia-Pacific Research Network (APRN) held in Thailand.

Through the discussion on globalization, migration and “feminization” of migration, the organizations that collaborated on this research wish to present general picture of what globalization is, how it impacts on the current migration process and the place of women in this process.

Through the use of the concrete issues of undocumented migrants, the trainee system in South Korea, and the NCS in Hong Kong, we wish to deepen the understanding on the situation that women migrants face in the face of the host country’s adherence to neoliberal policies.

This research project does not yet delve much into the issue of the intensifying migration of women due to globalization policies in labor-exporting countries. We have tried, however, to show this fact in our general exposition on globalization and migration.

Below are some of the countries APMM had already made research on:

Indonesia

Historical Development and Policies on Overseas Employment in Indonesia
The purpose of this research is to get an overview of how Indonesian migration developed and how it became an integral part of national government programs. This overview is important in order to better understand the current situation of Indonesian migrants. A case study of the issues and response of Indonesian Migrant Workers (IMWs) in Hong Kong is also included in the research.

Japan

DETERIORATING CONDITIONS IN THE JAPANESE ECONOMY AND ITS IMPACT ON MIGRANT LABOR
The purpose of this study is to gather already published literature regarding the current economic situation in Japan and how it impacts governmental policies on immigration and foreign workers. This would serve as background material to the ongoing research project of the SVD-JPIC Asia Region and Asia Pacific Mission for Migrants (APMM) on the “ASIA PACIFIC WIDE RESEARCH AND DOCUMENTATION ACTIVITY FOR MIGRANT WORKERS PARTICULARLY IN JAPAN AND SOUTH KOREA”.

Korea

SEGYEHWA ("Globalization") and Korea: Worsening Crisis in Society, Worsening Conditions for Migrant Workers
The purpose of this study is to gather current and past studies, data and information regarding the impacts of globalization policies into the foreign labor market in Korea. As one of the major destinations of migrant labor and one of the “hot spots” for undocumented workers, Korea has been steadily restricting entry and has been intensifying its crackdown towards undocumented workers.

Philippines

The Role and Process of Remittances in the Labor Export Industry in the Philippines
This two-part research is an exploration on the place of remittances of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) to the Philippine economy. OFW remittance has always been considered to be one main sources, if not the main source, of the dollars for the Philippines. The research deals on the forms and impacts of OFW remittance. The current policies of the Philippine government on OFW remittance is further explored in the second part of the research. This research was submitted ot the Asia Pacific Research Network (APRN).

“Case Study on the Development of Filipino Migrants Movement in Some Selected Countries in the Asia Pacific & Middle East Regions”
A study on the historical development of the Filipino progressive migrants movement. It chronicles the start and the progress of the movement in general and also in particular countries Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia and South Korea. The research also includes lessons drawn up from the experiences of Filipino migrant organizations.
