PARTNER MIGRANTS: Fighting for Safety, Dignity and Respect (3 of 3)

Last November 11, AMMORE in partnership with APMM and Gabriela Australia held an online forum entitled: PARTNER MIGRANTS: Fighting for Safety, Dignity and Respect. The objective of the forum is to build an understanding of our partner migrants’ situation and to consider actions to advocate and campaign for their rights, safety, and dignity.

The forum started by spotlighting a migrant organization, Gabriela Australia– which shared its experiences in holding partner migrants’ campaigns and organizing partner migrants of different nationalities. The main part of the program is Gracia de Belen’s sharing of her experience as a woman migrant in Australia from the Philippines. As a victim-survivor of domestic abuse, she experienced horrifying incidents of verbal and physical pain from her ex-partner. Gracia narrated a sad but powerful story of abuse and survival through the help of people’s organizations in Australia, particularly Gabriela. Gracia has lived in Australia for 7 years and is currently a Gabriela Australia executive committee member in Victoria.

Hosted by Ness Gavanzo of Gabriela Australia and with the help of Hsiao-Chuan of AMMORE, the event was attended by over 190 participants from Australia, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Macau, Taiwan, and the Philippines. The majority of the attendees were students of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines

This online forum is the 3rd of the 3 sessions AMMORE and APMM are holding to amplify the campaign on the rights of marriage migrants in the Asia-Pacific region.
