This research study on the indebtedness of foreign domestic workers (FDWs) in Hong Kong is a qualitative one, and is impelled by the need to substantiate with ground-based information ongoing migrant advocacy campaigns against overcharging and illegal collection of recruitment fees.

Conducted in 2003, this APMM case study profiles Indonesian labor migration from a social-historical perspective. It was one of this first studies in this area when it was published, and except for the outdated statistics, its analysis of the context and trends in Indonesian labor migration are still relevant.

This research is an offshoot of the SVD-JPIC conference on migrants. Through this collaborative project of the Asia Pacific Mission for Migrants (APMM) and the SVD-JPIC, relevant information on grassroots migrant organizations, migrant institutions and advocates was gathered, and in general, the situation and concerns of migrant workers in Korea.
