Call for appeal: Support Migrant Worker Victims of the Tai Po Fire
Dear friends,
Greetings of peace!
It has been two weeks since the Tai Po fire tragedy on 26 November that killed 160 individuals with 31 still missing. Of the total number of deaths, ten are migrant domestic workers who died while saving their lives and protecting the lives of their ward (children and elderly). The fire affected almost 2000 households who are now living in temporary shelters provided by the Hong Kong government.
According to the latest records of the Mission For Migrant Workers (MFMW) and Bethune House Migrant Women Refuge (BHMWR), there are 232 migrant domestic workers (MDWs) affected by the Tai Po fire (92 Filipinos and 140 Indonesians). Ten of them were confirmed dead while two are still in the hospital (ICU).
MDW survivors of the tragedy are now living in temporary shelter, suffering from immense psychological trauma and are hard-pressed to continue working for the sake of their families at the home countries.
The APMM is working closely with MFMW, BHMWR and the Asian Migrants Coordinating Body, a network of migrant worker organisations of various nationalities, in providing support to the affected MDWs.
At present, the APMM office now serves as an emergency donation depot for the victims of Taipo fire tragedy. Together with our partners, we are appealing for financial, material and psychosocial support from concerned groups and individuals to help the victims in overcoming their horrific and difficult situation.
Specifically, the APMM is making an appeal to provide the victims with the following assistance and material support:
Basic necessities such as clothing, toiletries, transportation, communications
Physical health and psychological health needs (e.g., support for medical fees, counselling, etc.)
Immediate financial relief for terminated migrant domestic workers
Facilitating with the HK and sending government to immediately secure their identification documents (HKID and passport) and their employment needs
