NEW PUBLICATION: “Information is Power”: A multicountry research on confronting trafficking through communication
This newest publication from APMM and the World Association for Christian Communications (WACC) unpacks policy gaps in anti-trafficking mechanisms in the Philippines, Indonesia, Nepal, Thailand, Malaysia, South Korea, and Hong Kong. This research also explores the communication needs of migrants who are vulnerable to exploitation – citing how accurate and accessible information is crucial to address issues on trafficking.
With the support and contribution of SANDIGAN Philippines, Beranda Migran, Lutheran World Federation Nepal, Kaagapay ng Migranteng Pilipino sa Thailand, Karamay ng Migranteng Pilipino sa Penang, KASAMMAKO, and the Asian Migrants Coordinating Body Hong Kong, the research comprehensively assesses the effectiveness of anti-trafficking policies and mechanisms in the mentioned countries. Findings show that the government, mainstream media, and private sector entities are not keen in providing accessible and accurate information to vulnerable migrants. In this case, non-government organizations and grassroots organizations fill in the gaps in services and information dissemination channels to help migrants in navigating unfamiliar terrains.
Overall, the research recommends ways forward that emphasize the need for migrants-centered processes and avenues that will uplift the communication and human rights, and welfare of migrants in the region.
